Does Luongo Deserve To Be Captain?
October 1, 2008 by Steven
You’re god damn right he deserves to be captain. Fantastic decision by management to name Roberto Luongo captain.
During the 2006/07 playoffs it was all Luongo, the offense produced next to nothing during that playoffs. In fact it has been all Luongo since he’s arrived, and this probably won’t change for a while.
Due to league rules, goalies are are not allowed to be Captains, meaning Mattias Ohlund, Willie Mitchell, and Ryan Kesler will rotate as Captains. Since Luongo can’t take part in ceremonial events because he’s a goal keeper, what good is it naming him as a captain then, you may ask. The answer is simple, he’s the first to hoist Lord Stanley’s cup. And who more deserving? Also by naming Luongo as Captain, the management has made it abundantly clear that the Canucks organization have full intention to keep him in Vancouver when his contract expires in two years. What a mess we’d be without him.
The last goalie to be named Captain was Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1947-48 season, and a new rule was implemented a year later prohibiting goalies from wearing the C. Now how do we solve the problem about Luongo not being able to wear a C on his jersey, due to a rule established forty years ago? Behold the answer:

It’s exactly as it looks, Roberto Luongo needs to legally change his name to Roberto C Luongo. Bingo, bango, bongo, his name is C Luongo. C for captain, C for clutch, C for cup. Problem solved.
With the departure of two former captains, from within rises a leader that has not been seen in over forty years of hockey. The wall that backstops the team is now the pillar of support that will not only hold this organization together, but will carry it to the promise land. Start planning the parade folks, the Canucks have a new leader.

Luongo needs to step up his game. His save % is horrible this start!
